Science Fair and Historica Fair take a lot of time for Riverview students.
Although some class time is spent on each, students give up a lot of personal time as well to produce great projects
for both of these events!
All students have participated in Science Fair. Many students have spent extra hours doing experiments and writing up their projects
on the computers in the lab after school is done for the day. Teachers have often stayed several days a week, until the early evening,
in order to provide students with extra class time, lab time and help, to complete their projects.
Generally the school science fair, judged by volunteers from the Dryden community, discovers some excellent projects.
This leads to several students being able to take their science project to the regional level. From there, Riverview has
had participants in the Canada wide science fair many years in succession.
The success Riverview had so frequently in the past, was thanks to Grade 7 teacher, Mrs. Christy Scime. Mrs Scime was the
Riverview Intermediate teacher who taught Science in Grade 7 and 8 under a rotary type system which was in place then. She encouraged her students to strive for
excellence in their research and presentations. Mrs. Scime has also been a very important part of what made the fair happen,
not only in our school but also regionally. Pinewood is now the school where Mrs. Scime is continuing to provide excellence in teaching to the students in her classes.
And Riverview now has other teachers to carry on Riverview Science Fair success.
In 2004/2005, Riverview participated in its first Historica Fair. Riverview students did very well and several were sent
to represent Riverview at the regional fair. At the Regional fair, two-student pairs who had done so well at the school
level, had to decide who would do their presentation at the regional level, as only one student was allowed to attend at that level. Here they did so well that some students
went to the National competitions. As only one student in a two-student pair was able to go to the Regional as well as the
National competitions, students had to make some very tough decisions. There were some selfless choices made, much to
the credit of the students involved.
Again in 2005/2006 Riverview students competed at the Regional Historica Fair. Judging was at St. Joseph's school April 20th all day. Riverview students again did well!
Grade 7 student Kathryn Apland went on to the National level with her project and came back with top honours.
Riverview is very proud of our students who strive for excellence in whatever they do and the tradition of excellence continues.
This year Ms. Ferriolo is providing all students in Grade 4 to 8 with a
booklet to introduce Historica Fair 2008!
